Kansas remains above the national average in percentage of
employees in manufacturing and small and medium industries account for the
increasing numbers of employees. Employment growth has averaged just over three
percent a year in recent years. From 1995 to 1997, Wichita area employment
growth ranked 31st. out of 182 major metropolitan areas in the U.S. With
two-year growth of 7.31 percent, regionally only Dallas and Denver surpassed us
in metro-area growth. Wichita far outpaced the national growth rate of 4.69
percent.
The unemployment rate in 2004 was 6.2 percent - down from 7.1
percent in 2003.

Wichita has long been an incubator for entrepreneurship,
offering a wide spectrum of career opportunities for trained professionals to
skilled workers and everything in between. Although the economy has put the
crunch on some business, others continue to prospect, including construction,
retail and service and tourism industries.
Entreprenuership is alive in Wichita and is one of Wichita's
brightest spots. Numerous companies were born here including: Boeing, Cessna,
Beech, Pizza Hut, Rent-A-Center, InterVoice Brite, Coleman and Learjet. Wichita
State University is home to the Center for Entrepreneurship, a nationally
ranked center which offers undergraduate and graduate classes and degrees.
